Our Story

It all began breeding Alpacas…

Over 20 years ago, Joy and Garry had a dream of farming alpaca’s as Joy thought they were wonderful creatures. They bought a property with land for the alpaca’s with the intention of building a tourist attraction, and that is exactly what they did! They bred alpacas and set up The Alpaca Centre which informed the public, vets and other keen breeders all about alpacas which were very new to the UK at the time after being imported from Peru. Wowed by the exquisite clothing that Peru was renowned for, a few pieces of bespoke alpaca knitwear were introduced into the centre. Before long, customers were starting to see the wonderful properties that alpaca fibre offered and there was a huge demand from customers for more garments. The centre expanded offering a wide range of alpaca accessories, homeware and Peruvian gifts. Other quality brands and fibres were introduced too and the clothing side of things became so popular that the decision was made to try a slightly different route, and so The Alpaca Clothing Co was born!

Joy and Garry are still very much involved in the business, (Garry is even the photographer behind many of our beautiful images across the website!) but their daughter Katie has continued their dream taking the company forward. We still continue to source the finest alpaca garments that Peru has to offer and our range is forever growing.

Our shop

You will find Peruvian alpaca clothing, accessories and more. We also stock trouser specialist brand BRAX, as well a small selection of leather goods and homeware. If you have visited us before, you may find things a little different this time. Since Covid, we have closed our tearoom and we no longer have any Alpacas for you to see. This means our sole focus is on our shop and our customer service. We will be pleased to welcome you and look forward to your visit. We are open Monday to Friday our beautiful alpaca garments with you all whilst still providing a personal and friendly service.

Our online venture…

We delved into the online World several years back and set up our website to run alongside our shop. In March 2020, the unthinkable happened, and we were forced to close the shop like many others, due to Covid19. Not all was lost and we were not deterred, instead, we pushed on and put all of our focus and energy into our website to make it the very best it could be and so that we could still reach our customers and enable them to shop with us.

Our values…

Customer service and quality is at the very heart of our family business. Our passion means that you are always guaranteed a service that goes above and beyond. We truly love alpaca fibre and what it has to offer, so we source high quality, unique pieces that are a pleasure to wear.

We are passionate about working with Peruvian designers and manufacturers who use their skills and knowledge passed down from generations. Working with a range of companies from larger scale manufacturers to artisans in the Andes, we have built solid relationships and friendships within Peru. Supporting the work in Peru not only allows the wonderful people to maintain their heritage, but it allows their culture to be expressed within the designs that we, together with them, can offer you. Only the very best quality alpaca yarns are hand-selected for our garments.

It is becoming well known that fast fashion is having a huge impact on our planet. Sustainability and eco-friendly fashion must be the way forward. It makes us proud to work with a natural fibre that embodies these values. Not only are Alpacas good for the land that they graze, the fibre that they produce allows garments to be made that last for many years. The outstanding quality means you can invest in a garment that will last.
